SIP Audio & Video Communication Solution for Sydney Metro City & Southwest, Australia

Sydney Metro City & Southwest is a landmark smart rail transit project in Australia. With a construction period from 2020 to 2024 and a total length of approximately 30 km, the project consists of a newly built metro tunnel section and an upgraded existing railway section. The new section was officially opened in August 2024, recording more than 66.8 million passenger trips in its first year with a passenger satisfaction rate of 98%.

The project is equipped with an AVAYA dispatch system. However, challenging operating environments, including high humidity and dust in tunnels as well as potential equipment damage in public areas, created higher requirements for communication terminal reliability and adaptability. Customized SIP communication terminals were therefore required to ensure stable and efficient communication across different application scenarios.

Customized SIP Communication Solution

J&R delivered SIP audio and video communication terminals for this project, covering tunnels, trackside areas, platforms, and passenger service areas. All terminals support SIP protocol and seamlessly integrate with the AVAYA management platform. The solution includes both audio and video communication terminals, deployed according to different application requirements to support railway operators, station staff, and passengers.

All deployed terminals feature industrial-grade corrosion resistance and impact protection, enabling long-term and reliable operation in demanding metro environments.

Project Value & Application Results

The complete communication solution established an efficient communication network connecting the control center, tunnels, platforms, and field personnel. Video terminals assist operators in quickly identifying on-site conditions, significantly improving maintenance coordination and emergency response efficiency.
Since deployment, 1,200 communication terminals have been operating reliably, effectively addressing cross-location and multi-role communication requirements. The project provides a mature industrial communication solution supporting the continued development of intelligent rail transportation in Australia.
